Baxter was born in Lewes, Sussex, England on July 31, 1804; his father was a printer, wood engraver, and publisher; studied at High School at St. Ann's, Lewes, under Mark Anthony Lower, the antiquarian; entered father's business, and in 1925 became a pupil of a Mr. Williams, a London wood engraver; began own business as wood engraver and printer, 1827; invented process of printing pictures in natural colors by using an aquatint key plate, superimposing colors with wood and metal blocks, and obta...
